all things scandinavian

Norway, Sweden, Denmark. I would love to visit you someday. Sweden, you brought me IKEA and Poway’s Royal Swedish Bakery. Norway, you brought me relatives (that’s right, it’s in my blood!) and some wonderful musicians, like the Kings of Convenience and Sondre Lerche. And Denmark, you give us royal weddings:

That happened today, actually. I’m a sucker for fairy tales.

books

Today, I am officially done with the spring semester at the community college and, consequently, I am also done with community college entirely! Alas, I am not done with my associate degree. I’m having technical issues with the BYU Independent Study class I am taking, and I need that class to transfer to the college for my degree. That is obviously on the to-do list for tomorrow.

On a lighter note, I’ve decided to list some of the books I am bringing with me to BYU, as I leave in just over 3 weeks.

  • Nursery Friends from France (1925? The cover page is missing)
  • Walt Disney’s Stories from Other Lands (1965)
  • Bonjour Paris (1963)
  • Nylon Street (2006)
  • The Man With The Dancing Eyes (2003)
  • A Man Jumps Out of an Airplane (1992)

I have a couple other books in my room that I intend on bringing (as they pertain to a play that I am loosely working on), as well as a blank journal my mom gave me, and more I’m sure. I guess we’ll find out the day before I leave as I frantically grab anything and everything that will fit in the car.

I’m also bringing my small organ. People are going to kill me.

Indeed!

(Almost) Done Done Done

Community college. Oh, driving between 20 and 40 minutes to school Mondays through Thursdays all of these weeks. Oh, the lack of social life. Oh, the school work I should have spent more time on. Oh, the things I didn’t care about.

On October 31, 2007, I flew up to Utah to check out colleges and hang out with my Aunt Susan, Uncle Rick, and their three fantastic boys. I may have broke down emotionally a couple of times just dreading the last semester. I couldn’t see the end even then. Susan and Rick lovingly gave me advice and told me that having an Associate degree would transfer better than just a bunch of single classes. It’s a solid document, they said, and that would make a significant difference in the ease of transferring.

During that trip, we visited Salt Lake Community College, Brigham Young University (Provo), University of Utah, and Brigham Young University (Idaho). SLCC was definitely out- they weren’t very friendly and I could get the same education at home without paying nonresident fees. U of U was such a gorgeous campus. I love downtown Salt Lake City, but it just didn’t feel right. On my last day in Utah, my aunt and I spontaneously drove up to Idaho to check out that campus. I don’t think I even called my mom until we were there to say “Oh, hey, we’re in Idaho, by the way.” It just slipped both of our minds. We had a good time– everyone was extremely friendly, it was cold, but tolerable (though I wouldn’t say the same if I visited in the dead of winter)… but I didn’t get that feeling again.

Brigham Young University (Provo). I got that feeling, and I felt so much that I would get in, but I didn’t think I could get in. Long story short, I did.

And now we are here.

San Diego Mesa College, Associate in Arts – English

I still have two finals and a PE class to finish, though, so I’m not really done yet.

In closing, let’s just all pray I get my diploma in the mail and didn’t screw this up somehow.

Yours, Allison

8 May 2008

Can you believe that in just over a week I will be graduating? I can’t. I don’t want to think about it, though. I’ll probably trip during the ceremony.

Tonight in my creative writing class, we workshopped an excerpt from A Sailor and Lover. Six classmates became Jack, Gwen, Alex, Erica, Erlend, and Laura to read through it. In short, I had a smile pasted on my face the entire time. The class loved it, I loved it, and I hope that the entire play is featured at a reading or even is fully performed someday. We shall see!

Returning to the graduation subject, my aunt Susan Barnson Hayward took my graduation photo which was sent out with announcements recently.

She’s such an excellent photographer! I love my family!
